School library media specialists need to promote public awareness of the central role which library media programs play in the education of children and young adults. Plan to celebrate School Library Media Day (SLMD) on the Wednesday of National Library Week or some other day during the week. National Library Week theme is Log On@the Library.

School Library Media Day for 1998 is held during National Library Week which is celebrated from April 19-25, 1998. Through your state professional organization, you may be able to have a state observation of SLMD. You can also plan observances at the district and school level. The following information was developed by the Virginia Educational Media Association (VEMA) for Virginia's first observance of SLMD in 1986. Barbara Booker and Gladys Pannell of VEMA put together an excellent handbook that is still very relevant if you are looking for school library media promotional ideas.
