From the Virginia
Educational Media Association handbook, Awesome School
Library Media Day by Barbara Booker and Gladys Pannell.
To
share with students, parents, educators and the community the materials
and services provided by the media center
Procedures
Celebrate School Library Media Day with an open house--sharing and
displaying as many activities as possible. This special event might begin
early in the day with students being invited to tour the media center and
participate in the activities. Urge the students to return with their
parents in the evening.
Extend invitations to parents, teachers, local school board members,
county commissioners, and friends of the school. Announce the event in
the school newspper and the local newspaper. Use spot announcements on
local radio or "commercials" broadcast on the intercom at school.
Following is a list of suggested activities from which you might
choose:
1. Have available for adults a short computer course or introduction to
the Internet
2. Display a video, slide show or photographic collage of activities
which happened in the media center during the year
3. Have a student or students interview visitors on video camera about
the school and media center. (Example: How has the library changed since
you were in school? What was your favorite book?)
4. Display student art work (Examples: computer graphics, mobiles, book
covers, drawings about books)
5. Make available examples of the types of media and materials used in
the media center (Examples: videos, computer software, art prints,
etc)
6. Record on a display board the tally of a vote for the students'
favorite books. Display top ten books.
7. Have students telling stories; performing skils or giving puppet
shows
8. Demonstrate distance learning, telelectures and other programs
Involve as many students as possible in your open house. Use student work
as displays with students to demonstrate or explain. Parents will attend
if their children are involved.
