School Library Media Day

Open House/Media Fair

From Virginia Educational Media Association handbook, Awesome School Library Media Day, by Barbara Booker and Gladys Pannell.

This is a day long event.

Objectives

1. To expose the community to all aspects of the school library media program

2. To give students the opportunity to share their media skills and experiences

Procedures

1. Invite parents, educators, and community leaders (government officials). Involve students in sending personal invitations.

2. Place posters in schools, malls, and other public places. Sponsor a poster contest to supply posters

3. Publicize your Open House/Media Fair in local media

4. Have "hand-outs" available for visitirs. Suggestions include: School Library Media Handbook; Bibliographies of new materials; Caldecott/Newbery Titles; suggested reading lists; brochure explaining and highlighting all media services; bookmarks made by students

5. Set up a number of centers and displays for visitor partipation: Listening and/or viewing centers; manipulatives; design & production; Students should be near to offer assistance.

6. Have a demonstration of students video-taping activities or share video tapes of recent events: elections, book reports, student skits, or ITV programs used in the school.

7. Set up a Reference Center using trivia questions; give awards for locating answers.

8. Have different groups of students using computer skills throughout the day

9. Continue all regular activities in the Center. DO NOT CLOSE THE MEDIA CENTER ON THIS DAY!

10. Display a scrap book of Center activities

11. Creative dramatics/storytelling activities should be included if possible

12. Include students as hosts and guides

13. Serve light refreshments (PTA could help with this)
