MARC TAGS : Introduction to MARC Records

Here are some MARC tags with discussion.

[Oxx] [1xx]

You will need to set your policy on what information will form your basic records, that is what common information will be collected for all items. Some school districts have actually set policies on what will form the basic record for all items.

010 Library of Congress Control Number (LCCN). The LCCN goes into subfield a

020 International Standard Book Number (ISBN). A valid ISBN number goes into subfield a. Note that a title can have different ISBN numbers for hardcover, paperback, large print, etc.

022 International Standard Serial Number (ISSN)

A valid ISSN number goes into sub-field a. Some school libraries do not catalog their periodicals. You will need to set your policy on this. Personally, I think it is a good idea to catalog your periodicals so that all your holdings are in the catalog.

040 Cataloging Source

Who cataloged the item? sub-field a. If you did the original cataloging your school name would go here.

Who transcribed the record into machine readable format? sub-field cIf you did the original your school name would go here.

Who modified the record? Sub-field d. Ditto above.
