Festival Season '96

Celebrate 100 years of Utah statehood with three splendid productions honoring our heritage as Americans, Westerners, and lovers of life, laughter, and song!

La Fanciulla Del West
(The Girl of the Golden West)
by Giacomo Puccini
Miners! Forty-niners! Highwaymen and heroines! The soaring melodies of Giacomo Puccini and the romantic realism of David Belasco, so successful in Madama Butterfly, are joined again in a love story set in the most exciting moments of the days of Gold Fever. The Girl of the Golden West is the story of Minnie, owner of the Polka Saloon, friend, schoolmistress and beloved of all the miners, and her romance with Dick Johnson, a dashing highwayman. Set against the adventure of the California Gold Rush, The Girl of the Golden West is Puccini's tribute to the American Spirit and to all those who risked their lives for gold.
(In Italian with English supertitles.)
1776
by Sherman Edwards and Peter Stone
Life! Liberty! The pursuit of happiness! John Adams leads our founding fathers to create a new nation conceived in Liberty! The wit of Ben Franklin and the romance of Tom Jefferson blend with Adams' fiery spirit to tell the story of America itself in a combination of rousing tunes, sprightly humor, and the mixture of independent and often cantankerous men who, with inspired vision and practical sacrifice, made 1776 a remarkable time in history. 1776, featuring Michael Ballam in the role of John Adams, is the inspiring tale of the Declaration of Independence and the birth of a new nation. In celebration of the Utah Centennial, UFOC is proud to present 1776, an award-winning musical excursion into our nation's history.
(In English.)
Don Pasquale
by Gaetano Donizetti
Pantaloons and chaps! Living it up in the Wild West, foolish old Don Pasquale meets his match in the pretty, feisty Norina. Don Pasquale is a shoot 'em up, shake 'em up romp through the topsy-turvy world of mistaken marriage and true love triumphant. As sprightly as a dance hall, you'll ride high with laughter as Don Pasquale learns that you can't stop the course of true love-especially between a cowboy and his gal. With great tunes by Donizetti and the spirit of the Old West, UFOC offers this comedy in tribute to the Festival of the American West which runs concurrently with our Opera Festival here in Logan. You'll love this comedy-Cowboy Style!
(In English.)

Capture the color of the Gold Rush, the excitement of our nation's birth, and the romance of the Old West!
