How to activate your student E-mail/VMS account.
From the Communications Department Computer Lab
If you have ever set up an E-mail (VAX/VMS) account before at USU their "SL" account will
still be the same and you do not need to set up a new account. The only exception is if you were
not registered for more than two consecutive quarters in a row.
If you have forgotten your username see Jake during open access hours. If you have forgotten
your password then you need to go see Freda in RM. 301 of the S.E.R. building. Take a photo
I.D. Otherwise follow the instructions below.
Turn on the computer and monitor. (The switches are located on the front of each unit)
Enter the User name and password supplied on the tag on the front of the monitor.

Click the start button in the lower lefthand corner of the screen. Point to the top category
"Programs."
Another box will appear to the right. Move the pointer to the "Internet Apps" group. Another
box will
appear to the right. Move the pointer down to the "Telnet" icon and click once. The telnet
program will
start.

Click on the word "Connect." While holding the mouse button down move the pointer
down to "Remote System" and then let the mouse button up. Enter "cc.usu.edu" in the box for the
"Host
name" and the press the "Connect" button. You are now connected
to the campus wide mail system.
When prompted for a user name enter the word "user." This
starts the one time setup program.
Enter "1" to activate a VMS account.
Then enter your student number (social security number) and name as
prompted.
Next the account number is assigned. It will start will the letters "SL" and then have three
other alpha-numeric characters. Write this down. It will be your account name and E-mail
address. A short test on approved uses is then given. The answers to the questions are found in
the paragraphs
that precede the question.
Finally you will be prompted for a password. Think of a letter/number combination that
someone will
not easily be able to guess. As you type nothing will appear on the screen. This is to ensure no
one could
look over you shoulder and get your password. You will then re-enter the password to make sure
you
didn't mis-type it.
Your account is now set up. To log in again repeat the process of starting telnet only use
your SL***
instead of user and then enter your password. Your full Internet E-mail address will be
SL***@cc.usu.edu.
