Graduate Degree Requirements

Core Courses

Core courses for the master's degree are Comm 601 and Comm 670, plus courses in survey research, qualitative methods, and theory.

Other Requirements

  • Students are required to submit a detailed plan of study within the first five months of graduate study.
  • Students may elect either Plan A (thesis) or Plan B (nonthesis) options to fulfill the degree requirements. Plan A is advised for students planning to continue graduate study, to teach, or to enter professions requiring research skills. Plan B may be elected by students seeking a terminal, professionally oriented degree. Selection of the Plan A or Plan B option must be made in consultation with the adviser.
  • Of the minimum of 45 credits required for graduation, Plan A students may use a maximum of 9 credits for thesis and Plan B students may use a maximum of 3 credits for the Plan B project, plus 3 credits of approved internship. Between 6 and 15 graduate credits must be taken in a cognate area.
