Telnet Service Turn-Off
The telnet service on falcon has been disabled as of July 1, 2003. The telnet
service is inherently insecure because it is not encrypted. As of July 1, 2003,
shell access to falcon will be available only through an SSH ("secure
shell") client. All regular falcon users already use SSH clients, so there
should be little disruption except for those infrequent users unfamiliar
with SSH.
Available SSH clients
Windows
Novell/NetWare users can use SecureCRT, found in the JMU Apps folder, or
anyone can download PuTTY by clicking here.
MacOS
OS X includes the command-line OpenSSH, available from a Terminal window
with the ssh command (see the unix-style documentation at
ssh(1) for
usage instructions). Users with MacOS versions prior to OS X can acquire
NiftyTelnet+SSH by clicking here.
Linux/Other Unix Systems
Recent distributions of Linux and many other unix systems come with OpenSSH
installed. See
ssh(1) in the documentation for usage instructions.
