Skills Virginia's Standards of Learning Objectives
Core Objectives
These standards (copyright: Virginia State
Department of Education,
1985) will be revised. Currently these
remain the standards in place. The standards may still be helpful
to new school library media professionals developing information use
programs. The following are the core objectives which are to be
taught K12 in conjunction with the classroom teacher.
CORE 1
The student will demonstrate responsible use of the
library/information center.
Descriptive Statement: Emphasis is on citizenship, the right
to information and procedures.
CORE 2
The student will select recreational and informationals
sources appropriate to his level.
Descriptive Statement: Emphasis is on assessing materials
appropriate to ability, interest and need.
CORE 3
The student will participate in a variety of literary
experiences to increase appreciation of literature in all formats.
Descriptive Statement: Emphasis is on a variety of literary
forms and formats, which are introduced at appropriate grade levels.
CORE 4
The student will retrieve specific information by clearly
expressing his needs using appropriate questioning skills.
Descriptive Statement: Emphasis is on the continuous
refinement of questioning skills.
CORE 5
The student will recognize the availability of information from
a variety of community resources.
Descriptive Statement: Emphasis is on public, academic and
special libraries as well as other institutions and agencies.
CORE 6
The student will demonstrate an understanding of the ownership
of ideas.
Descriptive Statement: Emphasis is on respecting copyright
regulations, crediting sources, and demonstrating ethical conduct.
