Library Information Skills. Fourth Grade
The following includes Virginia's older Standards of Learning Objectives
[cVirginia State Dept. of Education, 1985]. Following the older library
information standards, is a list of the Virginia Standards of Learning
Objectives revised objectives for
subject content disciplines which relate to the library information skills
curriculum.
Virginia's 1985 SOLs. Fourth Grade
Core skills 1-6 should be presented in a manner appropriate to this grade.
The librarian will work cooperatively with the classroom teacher to
achieve the fourth grade objectives.
4.1 The student will recognize that informational and recreational
sources in a library/information center are arranged according to a
specific system.
Descriptive statement: Emphasis is on using the Dewey Decimal
System for non-fiction and alphabetical arrangement for fiction.
4.2 The student will identify a folk tale, a myth and a tall tale.
Descriptive statement: Emphasis is on recognizing the
characteristics of these literary forms.
4.3 The student will identify the characteristics of a biography and
locate a book in the biography section.
Descriptive statement: Emphasis is on understanding that a
biography is a book about a person's life and that the biography section
is arranged by the last name of the biographee.
4.4 The student will locate information, using maps, tables and
graphs.
Descriptive statement: Emphasis is on finding directions,
using a scale to measure distances on maps and globes, and using a legend
to find information, eg. county seats, topography, and historical sites.
4.5 The student will locate information on a given topic in an
encyclopedia, card catalog, dictionary and other sources.
Emphasis is on using a variety of sources to locate
information on a topic.
4.6 The student will identify alternative retrieval tools available in
other locations.
Descriptive statements: Emphasis is on recognition of such
tools as book, computer, and microform catalogs.
4.7 The student will recognize the importance of expressing information in
his own words.
Descriptive statement: Emphasis is on rewriting materials for
individual use.
Virginia Revised Subject Content SOLs
English 4.3 The student will read and learn the meanings of unfamiliar
words.
Use knowledge of word origins; synonyms, antonyms and
homonyms; and multiple meanings of words.
Use word-reference materials including the glossary,
dictionary and thesaurus.
English 4.4 The student will read fiction and nonfiction, including
biographies and historical fiction.
Explain the author's purpose.
Describe how the choice of language, setting and information
contributes to the author's purpose.
Compare the use of fact and fantasy in historical fiction with
other forms of literature.
Explain how knowledge of the lives and experiences of
individuals in history can relate to individuals who have similar goals or
face similar challenges.
English 4.6 The student will read a variety of poetry.
Describe the rhyme scheme (approximate, end and internal)
Identify the sensory words used and their effect on the
reader.
Write rhymed, unrhymed and patterned poetry.
Englis 4.9 Research. The student will use information resources to
research a topic.
Construct questions about a topic.
Collect information, using the resources of the media
center.
Evaluate and synthesize information for use in writing.
Use available technology.
